Before you begin create 2 folders and name them "source" and "destination".
1. Collect a copy of the images to be re-sized into the folder named source. (If you have just renamed your images, be sure to remove the images with the old names from the source folder and replace them with the newly-renamed images.)
2. Open IrfanView thumbnails and navigate to the source folder
3. Select all images and then choose File->Start batch dialog with selected files... which will pop-up a dialog box.
4. In the 'Output Directory' section, browse for and select the destination folder.
5. In the 'Work as' section, select 'Batch conversion'.
6. In the 'Batch conversion settings' section, make sure the Output format is set to "JPG - JPEG Format". If you want to review or alter the JPEG quality settings, click the 'Options' button (the defaults are usually adequate).
7. Put a check in the 'Use advanced options' box and then click the 'Set advanced options' button, which will pop-up another dialog box titled 'Settings for all images'.
8. In the pop-up dialog, put a check in the RESIZE box.
9. In the 'Set new size' section, be sure that 'pixels' is selected. Then choose one of the sizing options - the choices are:
- Set both sides to either a fixed Width or a fixed Height
- Set long side to a fixed value
- Set short side to a fixed value
I prefer to set the long side, and I find that 400-500 pixels is a good size. Alternatively, you could use the 'Set new size as a percentage of original' section and specify the percentages of Width and Height that you want.
10. Make sure that 'Preserve aspect ratio' is selected.
11. Make sure that 'Use Resample function' is selected (unless you have a really slow computer).
12. Make sure that 'Don't enlarge smaller images' is selected (unless you want them enlarged).
13. In the MISCELLANEOUS section you may want to select 'Save files with original date/time' to preserve the timestamp of the original file. The dialog may also have selected 'Apply changes to all pages', this is fine.
14. Once everything is set, click OK to close the dialog.
15. Now, back in the 'Batch Conversion' dialog, review all of your settings.
16. In the 'Input files' section, click the 'Start' button. IrfanView will process all of the files (which may be fairly quick, depending on your computer) and then pop-up a box titled 'Batch conversion done' with the results. The bottom line will be highlighted - this is the count of errors and warnings. If there were errors, read the messages to find out what the problem was, fix it and try again. Exit the pop-up.
10. Go back to the thumbnails window and browse to the destination folder and review your images to make sure you are satisfied with the new size.
Note: If you need to re-process the images, be sure to go back to the original files and start over. It is not a good idea to keep re-saving JPEG files as some quality will be lost every time you save.
