NHPCG Web – how to edit and maintain
Our site is www.nhpcg.org
Goal: make web site more useful, plus enable it so that more people can edit the web site.
Software that the web site uses is called SOHO launch. It has one channel of access for pages that are secured, and a different channel of access for people who want to edit the pages.
Each member should have a page of their own that they can edit themselves. But we also want to have a restricted area for things that are not available to the public. One primary thing in this restricted area is a roster so that people can get to the latest member list.
Everyone will have two accounts. One will give access and one will allow one to edit. They are created with the same username and password. Mary came up with a unique password naming scheme. So each of us has a different password, but should be easy to remember. We are concerned about security because hacking is a concern all over the internet, and if anyone hacks into the web site and puts in a nasty surprise.
What this means is that people may need to log in a couple of times in a session, but it should be the same name and password.
The password that is used for viewing the restricted material, but the password for editing the pages can only be changed by the webmaster (Mary, or Pauline). So, people should not change their passwords so that we can keep them synchronized.
To log in as a member, click on the member button on the home page. Usernames are First letter and last name—RTrei. If you forget your password, you can click on that button and it will send it to you. (It searches the private database for your email match.)
Note that once you have logged in, the Member button now becomes the ‘Manage Account’ button which will allow people to update their email addresses. (Remember, it is not recommended to change your password. Contact Pauline or Mary if you want a change)
You can now go into the Members Only tab, and you can search the roster. In addition, below the Members Only button, two new buttons will appear: ‘Archived Documents’ and ‘Past Meetings’.
If you click on the Meetings button, you will get a table overview of all planned meetings. Each meeting has a details link that shows the materials list, and the meeting minutes.
If you want to edit anything, you go to http://www.nhpcg.org/sohoadmin You will then be immediately prompted for your username and password. Once you log on, you will have a bar on the top of the screen, one of which is Edit Pages. You can then go to the page you want to edit, and you will be in an editor.
When you are done, click on the button that says ‘Save Page’. Then go back to ‘Edit Page’ and it asks you ‘Are you sure’. Say ‘Yes’. In short, there are lots of prompts for saving, and say yes to all of them.
Members can edit the FAQ, the links page, their own page, and the Meeting page, see Mary or Pauline if you need to edit more.
When login to edit, you will see a bar across the top. There is a button called Page Properties. This will open up a set of options. A very important one is the security code. You can select members or public. So you can have restricted pages, they do not have to be under the Members Only button.
When you login to the www.nhpcg.org/sohoadmin , you will be shown the list of pages that you can edit. If you go to your own page, you can drag and drop several items to customize your page.
One thing to note is that there are 12 meeting detail pages: meeting 1 through meeting 12. (January through December.) These will be recycled as needed, once we need to re-use January for exampe, the current January will go to the Archived Meetings section
